Beautiful Eyes: A Patient's Eyelid Story

Pam Lewelling's eyes were always her favorite, most prominent feature.

During the past decade, though, the Waddell, Arizona, resident began to hide those large, round and striking eyes beneath sunglasses.

"I didn't want to draw more attention to my eyes," she explains.

That was because, less than a decade ago, she began to experience a common medical issue - her upper eyelids began to droop into her peripheral vision.

Her lower eyelids, she said, also began to give her a tired appearance.

She often found herself lifting up her right eyelid with a finger, so she could see better, to read or watch TV.

"That is all that I saw when I looked in a mirror," she said. "Baggy eyelids."

After hearing about Emilio M. Justo, M.D., from a friend and neighbor, Pam decided to visit the Arizona Eye Institute & Cosmetic Laser Center, herself.

Dr. Justo has been performing eyelid surgery, called Blepharoplasty, for well over two decades.

Dr. Just and his staff were able to justify the medical necessity for getting Pam's upper eyelid surgery covered by her insurance, following a simple field vision test and insurance review. She opted to also have her lower eyelids done.

Today, following the outpatient procedure, she feels - and looks - 25 years younger. "The procedure was quick and painless, as was healing," she said.

And while her husband reassures her he loves her beauty no matter what - Pam is happy to have had the surgery, for her own self esteem and comfort. The new look comes just in time for the holidays.

"Now, I am going to try mascara again!"
