Food Drive Aims to Replenish Empty Shelves as Holidays Approach

The Arizona Eye Institute & Cosmetic Laser Center is teaming up with Valley View Community Food Bank to help replenish empty shelves reflecting what has been a deep year-round need, before the holidays arrive.

"To hear that families - children, parents and grandparents - are struggling every day right now, as we enter into the holiday season, has caused us to launch our food drive early this year," said Emilio M. Justo, M.D., Founder & Medical Director of the Arizona Eye Institute.

"We cannot enjoy the holiday season knowing the need that is out there, for food to fill the plates of our community friends every day, including on those special days we call 'holidays,'" Justo said. "This is a time of  year to reflect, and celebrate, and as a community we always come together to help where it is needed most."

The food drive will begin on Monday, October 16, accepting non-perishable foods that will help families during the holidays, as well as the days before and after.  Donations will be accepted at both Arizona Eye Institute's Sun City office at 10701 West Bell Road, and the Sun City West location at 19052 N. RH Johnson Blvd.

The food bank is needing a little bit of everything, according to Valley View Founder Jesse Ramirez.

"We really  need to replenish our food. Right now, two out of every five children here in Arizona are really needing our help. It is unbelievable the food insecurity that has plagued our community," Ramirez said. "Right now we are seeing a lot of elderly people, and people over 55 who are just not able to get back to work or get the hours they need. We are seeing many people in their 80s and 90s who have outlived their savings. It's been real tough."

Preferred items including protein such as canned tuna and other meats, peanut butter, and dry or canned beans; canned fruits and vegetables; nutritious soups, stews, chili, pasta and rice; baby formula and diapers; cereal boxes or bars; and juices.

Whether you are one of the 3.5 million spectators in New York, or one of the 50 million television viewers, watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is a tradition in many households. The parade debuted in 1924, when the department store wanted to host an event to showcase the opening of their 1 million square foot store. The first parade marched over six miles, and the floats featured characters from favorite nursery rhymes, and of course, Santa Claus in his sleigh. Today, the parade has shortened its route, but expanded its marchers to include helium balloons, marching bands, celebrities, and cheerleaders. However, Santa Claus still holds his iconic spot in the lineup, ringing in the Christmas season at the end of the parade.

We hope this Thanksgiving season finds you happy and healthy.
