Happy and Safe Fourth of July! By Emilio Justo on July 01, 2022

Fireworks Safety Tips

Have a wonderful

Independence Day

From the Arizona Eye Institute!

We all should celebrate and enjoy this beautiful day!

But please take precautions!  We want to see you for your annual exam, and not for an eye emergency.  Happy Fourth of July!

Fireworks tips to remember and share:

  • Always supervise children around fireworks, including sparklers. Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Ensure fireworks are currently legal in your area before buying or using them. Only buy legal fireworks. Store them in a cool, dry place.
  • Do not buy fireworks packaged in brown paper, these are for professional displays.
  • Consider using only very small fireworks over pavement if it is a particularly dry period.
  • Adults that set off legal fireworks should wear eye protection.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Do not stand directly over fireworks when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after igniting the fuse.
  • Light only one firework (including sparklers) at a time.
  • Sparklers may seem harmless but burn at near 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt metals! Each year they account for many terrible burns and injuries to children not supervised by adults. Consider using safer alternatives, such as glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers.
  • Do not carry fireworks in your pockets, the friction can ignite them.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors, away from buildings and launch them from a level fireproof surface with nothing in their flight path.
  • Never light or throw a firework from your hand.
  • Never aim fireworks at another person.
  • Do not aim fireworks at homes, leaves, shrubs, trees and flammable materials.
  • Never relight or pick up "dud" fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • Never shoot fireworks from a metal or glass container.
  • Do not throw fireworks in the trash immediately, pour water over them first and let soak for at least 10 minutes before discarding.
  • Always have a water supply or a hose nearby in case of fire.
  • Fireworks can traumatize pets greatly due to their sensitive hearing. Keep pets indoors and secure as well as comforted when fireworks are being used.
  • When watching professional shows, do not cross safety barriers for better views. Try to stay at least 500 feet away from the launch site. Do not pick up spent fireworks, they could explode still or burn you.

Have fun, but be safe!
