Complete Diagnosis and Treatment for Glaucoma

The Arizona Eye Institute & Cosmetic Laser Center handles comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. Glaucoma refers to a group of several eye diseases which cause pressure to build up inside your eye, putting stress on the optic nerve. This can cause a gradual or sudden loss of vision. Dr. Emilio M. Justo and his talented Medical Optometrists Dr. Mark Yates and Dr. Emily Marsh, uses advanced tools, such as the CIRRUS™ optical coherence tomography (OCT) test, to obtain an accurate diagnosis and detailed picture of your eye. We also offer several non-invasive, highly effective options to monitor and treat glaucoma. Contact our Phoenix practice to learn more about our treatment options and schedule your evaluation.

Understanding the Condition

The optic nerve serves an important function; it transmits signals from your eye to your brain. An increase in intraocular pressure can damage the optic nerve, and result in a loss of vision. With timely diagnosis and treatment, however, our team of providers can prevent permanent nerve damage. Because the onset of symptoms usually occurs late in the process, it is important to have vision exams on a regular basis to protect your eyesight.

There are two types of glaucoma:

  • Open-angle glaucoma: This is the most common form of the disease, and it progresses slowly. Open-angle glaucoma occurs when the drainage channel inside your eye is partially blocked. Symptoms include halos and a loss of peripheral vision.
  • Closed-angle glaucoma: This less common type of glaucoma develops quickly. Closed-angle glaucoma occurs when the iris rapidly changes shape and completely blocks the drainage channel. Symptoms include sudden vision loss, blurred vision, eye pain, and nausea.

Comprehensive Diagnosis

Early diagnosis is the key to successful glaucoma treatment. If you are experiencing symptoms of glaucoma, or you are at a high risk for the condition, our experienced providers will conduct a visual field test to check your peripheral vision. We can also use our advanced CIRRUS™ OCT test, which produces high resolution images of the retinal nerve fiber layer. This state-of-the-art device will measure how light is refracted in your eye, and create a 3-D digital map of your eye and optic nerve. This enables us to look for signs of glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Treatment Options

In the early stages of open-angle glaucoma, we may simply monitor your condition. As the disease progresses, we can recommend the treatment that is best suited to your needs. We can treat mild cases with prescription eye drops, which decrease fluid production and speed fluid outflow.

As your condition progresses, we may recommend argon laser trabeculoplasty. The extremely precise argon laser will clear the tissues that are blocking your drainage channel. The doctor may also perform an argon laser iridotomy to treat closed-angle glaucoma. During this procedure, the doctor will create an opening in your iris, allowing fluid to drain from your eye. Following a laser procedure, you will need to maintain ongoing visits with Dr. Justo or one of his Medical Optometrists, so we can monitor your progress. In severe cases, you may require a more extensive surgery. Dr. Justo can refer you to a local surgeon, and he will provide ongoing monitoring after your procedure.
