Benefits of an Eye Exam

Protect Your Vision

There are a variety of sight-threatening diseases that may not show symptoms until the damage to your eye is irreparable. Early detection from Dr. Justo and our team could save your vision.

Relieve Discomfort

You may be straining your eyes without even realizing it. Minor annoyances, such as dry eyes and headaches may be related to vision issues. Our optometrists can recommend simple solutions during your exam.

Reveal Health Risks

Your eyes provide a unique view of the overall health of your body. During an eye exam, your doctor can identify signs of various diseases that may otherwise go unnoticed, such as strokes, diabetes, and cancer.

But I Have Great Eyesight. Do I Need an Eye Exam?

Clear vision is not a reason to skip your annual exam. Many issues can affect your eye health without impacting your vision. Some eye diseases can go undetected without symptoms, so an eye exam is crucial to find any irregularities in your eye. An eye exam can help detect:

  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Retinopathy
  • Vision Issues

The staff is very attentive and polite. They acknowledge everyone as they come in. Roxanne is amazing! She always knows exactly what I need. Due to Covid I opted to postpone my appointment, almost 2yrs. It was like I was never gone, we picked right where we left off. Thank you Roxanne.

Vision Screenings
vs. Comprehensive Eye Exams

/

When patients think of eye exams, they may understand it only as a test to check on their vision. However, our Phoenix, AZ, offices offer comprehensive eye exams that closely examine the eye to diagnose the patient with any irregular eye conditions.

The Process of a Comprehensive Eye Exam

Our Phoenix, AZ, eye care exams consist of several tests that help our doctors discover any irregularities in your eye.
Our Phoenix, AZ, eye care exams consist of several tests that help our doctors discover any irregularities in your eye.

Visual Acuity Test

Visual acuity tests help measure how sharp your sight is. Typically this is a standard eye chart test. If you've noticed your vision diminishing, this test will let you know if you need eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Dilation Test

The doctor may dilate your eyes using eye drops to better look at your pupil. Patients with eye dilation will need to wear sunglasses after their appointment to protect their eyes from sunlight. Our Front Desk can provide you free temporary sunglasses to use on your ride home. Some patients may prefer a driver after they are dilated.

Refraction Test

Our ophthalmic technicians will work with our medical optometrists to perform a refraction test if your visual acuity test reveals that you may need eyeglasses. A phoropter is used to refract light entering your eyes and fine-tune the power of your lenses. In this test, you'll look through various lenses to see which prescription suits you the best.

Cover Test

A cover test is performed to see if you have ocular deviation. The test measures your eye alignment to see if your eyes are evenly working. For this test, one eye is covered while the other focuses on a subject in the room.

Slit-lamp Exam

Our office uses advanced diagnostic tools, like a slit-lamp, to more closely evaluate the health of each eye. A slit lamp can help doctors identify cataracts, cornea disease/injury, sclera damage, dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. The machine is like a microscope the doctor can look through to see if any eye conditions are present.

Depth Perception Test

We can also perform a depth perception test, otherwise known as a stereopsis test, to measure your depth perception.

Take a Closer Look at the Eye Exam Process

During your exam, the doctor will use a series of tools to examine the structures of your eyes and test your vision.

Eye Care Tips

Beyond your yearly eye exam at one of our Phoenix, AZ, area offices, there are eye care tips you should do every day to protect your eyes all year round:

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Your eyes aren't separate from your body. If you aren't maintaining a healthy diet, your eyesight can suffer. Vegetables, fruits, and fish high in omega-3 fatty acids can help keep your eyes in excellent working condition.

Exercise Regularly

Maintain a healthy weight through regular exercise, along with a balanced diet. Obesity can increase your chances of developing diabetes, leading to eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Avoid Smoking

Smoking doesn't just harm your lungs; it can also increase your risk for eye conditions such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Smoking can damage your optic nerve and create many eyesight problems in the future.

Wear Protective Eyewear

Wear protective eyewear for different occasions. If you work in construction or perform a job involving debris, sharp objects, and other hazards, make sure you're wearing protective eyewear.

Rest Your Eyes

If you have a job that requires you to look at the computer for long periods, let your eyes rest with the "20-20-20" rule. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away from your computer for 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.

Protect From Light

Wearing sunglasses in bright light reduces headaches from squinting and protects your overall eye health. Sun exposure can put you at a greater risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
